ILS (Instrument Landing System) ILS (Sistema de Aterrizaje por Instrumentos) A precision approach aid consisting of a localizer (lateral guidance) and a glide path (vertical guidance), sometimes with marker beacons or DME.
Transponder Transpondedor An electronic device on an aircraft that transmits a specific code in response to a radio-frequency interrogation.
Primary radar Radar primario A radar system that uses reflected radio signals to detect aircraft.
Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) Radar Secundario de Vigilancia (SSR) A radar system that relies on transponder replies from aircraft to determine their position, altitude, and identity.
TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) TCAS (Sistema de alerta de tránsito y anticolisión) The commercial implementation of ACAS II: an airborne system that interrogates transponders of nearby aircraft and issues traffic advisories (TA) and resolution advisories (RA).
GPWS/EGPWS (Ground Proximity Warning System) GPWS/EGPWS (Sistema de alerta de proximidad al suelo) A system designed to alert pilots if their aircraft is in immediate danger of flying into the ground or an obstacle.
FMS (Flight Management System) FMS (Sistema de Gestión de Vuelo) A specialized computer system that automates a wide variety of in-flight tasks, reducing the workload on the flight crew.
Autopilot Piloto automático A system used to control the trajectory of an aircraft without constant 'hands-on' control by a human operator.
Altimeter Altímetro An instrument used to measure the altitude of an object above a fixed level.
Airspeed indicator (ASI) Indicador de velocidad aerodinámica An instrument that displays the speed of the aircraft relative to the air.
VHF radio Radio VHF Very High Frequency radio used for short-range communication.
HF radio Radio HF High Frequency radio used for long-range communication.
DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) DME (Equipo de medida de distancias) A radio navigation technology that measures the slant range (distance) between an aircraft and a ground station.
VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) VOR (Radiofaro omnidireccional VHF) A type of short-range radio navigation system for aircraft, enabling aircraft with a receiving unit to determine their position and stay on course.
NDB (Non-Directional Beacon) NDB (Radiofaro no direccional) A radio transmitter at a known location, used as an aviation or marine navigational aid.
Mode C Modo C (código de altitud) A transponder mode that transmits altitude information.
ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) ADS-B (Vigilancia dependiente automática en radiodifusión) A surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation and periodically broadcasts it.
CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) CVR (Registrador de voz de cabina) A flight recorder used to record the audio environment in the flight deck of an aircraft.
FDR (Flight Data Recorder) FDR (Registrador de datos de vuelo / Caja negra) A crash-protected flight recorder that records aircraft parameters (altitude, airspeed, heading, control inputs, etc.) for accident and incident investigation.
ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) ACARS (Sistema de comunicaciones y reporte de aeronaves) A digital datalink system for transmission of short messages between aircraft and ground stations.
INS/IRS (Inertial Navigation/Reference System) INS/IRS (Sistema de navegación/referencia inercial) A navigation aid that uses a computer, motion sensors, and rotation sensors to continuously calculate the position, the orientation, and the velocity of a moving object.
EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System) EFIS (Sistema electrónico de instrumentos de vuelo) A flight deck instrument display system that displays flight data electronically rather than electromechanically.
ACAS (Airborne Collision Avoidance System) ACAS (Sistema anticolisión de a bordo) ICAO generic name for an airborne system, based on SSR transponder signals, that operates independently of ground equipment to warn of potential conflicts. TCAS II is its commercial implementation.
TA (Traffic Advisory) TA (Aviso de tránsito) An ACAS indication alerting the flight crew that a nearby intruder may become a threat. It does not require a manoeuvre.
STCA (Short-Term Conflict Alert) STCA (Alerta de conflicto a corto plazo) A ground-based safety net that alerts the controller to a potential or actual infringement of separation minima between aircraft.
MSAW (Minimum Safe Altitude Warning) MSAW (Aviso de altitud mínima de seguridad) A ground-based safety net that warns the controller of an increased risk of controlled flight into terrain by an aircraft.
Localizer (LOC) Localizador (LOC) The ILS component that provides lateral guidance along the extended runway centre line.
Glide path (GP) Trayectoria de planeo (GP) The ILS component that provides vertical guidance (normally 3 degrees). 'Glideslope' is the US term.
CPDLC (Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications) CPDLC (Comunicaciones por enlace de datos controlador-piloto) A means of communication between controller and pilot using data link for ATC messages instead of voice.

Preguntas frecuentes
